George Bush is going as...Bill Clinton
Happy Halloween.
George Bush will be masquerading as Bill Clinton.
Bush has said that he's not going to be distracted by indictments and grand juries. "We've got work to do," the president says. Sounds positively Clintonesque.
The only difference is that Bush has praised the independent counsel, Patrick Fitzgerald. Maybe he thought Fitizgerald, appointed by a Republican attorney general, would give the Bush folks a pass.
Clinton never did that. He always thought independent counsel Ken Starr was out to get him. Starr picked up an investigation that started out with an investigation of a real estate deal involving the Clintons and the Whitewater development.
Starr, who fancied himself something of an Elliot Ness pursuing the personal pecadillos of Clinton, sniffed out Paula Jones and then Monica Lewinsky.
He ran up a bill of, I think, about $80 million. But he didn't get a conviction.
Who knows how obsessed Patrick Fitzgerald is with finding the truth. At least he doesn't appear to be a panty-sniffer with an extremist political agenda, as was Kenneth Starr.
Fitzgerald hasn't hist paydirt yet. Or if he has, he hasn't told us who dropped a dime with right-wing-idealogue-masquerading-as-a-columnist Robert Novak and disclosed the identity of Valerie Plame Wilson.
Meanwhile, George Bush will continue his agenda on Iraq, hurricane response, Supreme Court nominations, and giving us a balanced budget.
A balanced budget. Now, that would be Clintonesque.
