Told you so...

I checked it out. Last April 11, I told you that Tom DeLay was toast.

It took more time than I thought it would for DeLay to get good and burnt on both sides. But he did yesterday, when word leaked that he won’t run for reelection. Word is he’ll resign from Congress.

But I was wrong about the trigger point. I said he’d leave because of the cumulative weight of the negative news coverage. After dogging DeLay nearly every step of the way through much of last year, this year the coverage had moderated, if not abated.

But prosecutors had not. Last week, one of his former top aides, Tony Rudy, told prosecutors he’ll cooperate with their probe over an alleged criminal operation run out of DeLay’s congressional office.

And in DeLay’s reelection camapaign, he was running 20 points behind his Democratic opponent, former Congressman Nick Lampson. DeLay had engineered a gerrymander by the Texas legislature to maneuver Lampson out of his congressional seat.

But now, it’s the Democrats who don’t want DeLay to go. In a perverse way, DeLay would have been the easiest Republican to defeat in the Democrats’ quest to regain control over the U.S. House.
